When our family lived in Europe (1966--1982) I wrote a weekly letter to my mother and my mother-in-law. When our first two children were born Thomas sent a telegram to our parents in Texas. When our third child was born Thomas remembers calling them instead of sending the telegram. That was one of the few calls we made to family during that sixteen year period.
With the first baby we sent photographs of our son almost every month--taken on the fourth of each month--the "anniversary" of his birth. But, as is usually the case, I was not so diligent with the picture taking with the second and third babies due to maternal exhaustion.
Today family communication, especially with our off-spring, is through email and cell phones and blogs. We see the latest pictures of our grand kids on facebook or smug-mug or as video on DVD. A blog entry can move us to tears or leave us rolling with laughter. The evolution of communictation is a wonderful thing. I love it.
